Copenhagen--Scandinavia's largest city
Copenhagen is Scandinavia’s largest and most livable city. The city’s name means “merchants harbor”. Located amongst tiny islands, Copenhagen sits on the island of Zealand and marks the passage from the Baltic to the North Sea making it one of the busiest ports in Northern Europe. Despite it’s size, Copenhagen is surprisingly easy to navigate. Even though Copenhagen has grown to become a large metropolitan, the city has not lost its traditional Danish charm. Copenhagen has much to offer tourists including world-class museums, royal palaces, and, of course, the landmark Tivoli amusement park. Copenhagen’s most recognizable symbol is the Little Mermaid from H.C. Anderson’s fairytale.
A statue of the Little Mermaid sits perched on a boulder alongside Copenhagen harbor. Everyday hundreds of tourists make the journey through splendid parks, gardens, and green areas surrounding the harbor to see the fable statue. Danes are well educated, English speaking, and very welcoming of tourists. The pedestrian walkway, Stroget, is a great place to experience the famed Danish hospitality first hand. Here you’ll find tasteful boutiques, fine restaurants, and cozy cafes. During the colder months it’s enjoyable to sip a cup of coffee or tea while wrapped in a warm blanket at one of the friendly outdoor cafes. Danes are proud of their heritage and are committed to preserving their traditional Danish values.
Interesting enough is that Copenhagen is a naturalist island meaning if you fancy walking around outside nude you are more then welcome to. Another symbol of Copenhagen’s liberal social values is the establishment of the “Free City” of Christiania. In the 1970’s a group of “squatters” claimed a portion of the city. Christiania remains completely self-governing. Copenhagen’s unique blend of old-world charm, urban sophistication, and enchanting accents leave little to be desired and make for a perfect get-a-way.
