About Carnarvon
Population 7,000 Lying at the mouth of the mighty Gascoyne River, Carnarvon is the regional hub of the Coral Coast's north with plenty of shops, services and places to get a meal and a drink. It is also an ideal base for exploring the wealth of stunning surrounds, including Mount Augustus National Park, Kennedy Ranges National Park, Carnarvon blow holes and Cape Cuvier with its rugged coastline.
There are also plenty of opportunities for great fishing, swimming and snorkelling all year round. For experienced surfers, just over 100 kilometres away, you can find some fantastic surfing locations in a very remote part of the country. Carnarvon is also famous for its banana plantations with over 180 in total. There are seasonal fruit picking opportunities available for backpackers.

Explore the remote Kennedy Range National Park, which offers spectacular scenery of gorges and precipitous faces, with a vast plateau of ancient dune fields on top of the range. Camping beneath the stark sandstone cliffs is an experience not to be missed.
Check out Mount Augustus (490km from Carnarvon), one of the most spectacular solitary peaks around. See the ocean water erupting into the air up to a height of 20 metres at the Carnarvon Blowholes. Seasonal fruit picking opportunities are available for backpackers in the many banana plantations.
