Hong Kong's Hairy Club Places


Shanghai Min 
This Shanghainese-owned mega chain is known for its innovative crab-based creations. Try wok-tossed crab cream served with steamed meatballs, or the hearty soup spun from the crustacean’s meat and roe. Of course, you can also go for old favourites, like the signature stone-grilled hairy crab cream rice. Set menus are also available ranging from $398 to $528 per person. Chef Kenny Chan’s menu features roe-filled hairy crabs from Taihu Lake, as well as the finest yellow crabs sourced from domestic waters. Guests can enjoy these seasonal delicacies in steamed, smoked or salt-baked form. Other highlights from the 13-deep menu include pan-fried turnip cakes tossed with yellow crab cream and sautéed rice cakes served with a whole hairy crab. Choose your own poison. Man Wah 
The Mandarin Oriental partners up once again with Shanghai’s famed Cheng Long Hang Crab Palace to launch a seasonal crab feast from October 27 to November 4. Expect deliciously indulgent creations such as chicken wings stuffed with crabmeat, and steamed rice topped with fragrant roe. To complete the experience, Cheng Long Hang’s restaurant supervisors will be on hand to show off their impressive, quick-as-lightning crustacean de-shelling skills. 25/F, Mandarin Oriental, 5 Connaught Rd, Central, 2825 4003. 

Tin Heung Lau 
Hairy crab fans swear by this old-school Hangzhou restaurant. Dishes are expensive though, so only come here if you’re prepared to splurge. Try the thick wheat noodles served with a side of golden crab cream or go with the most traditional steamed preparation that’s designed to be dipped in black vinegar. 18C Austin Ave, Tsim Sha Tsui, 2366 2414. 

Yu Lei 
This glitzy Chinese restaurant goes all out with its first ever hairy crab promotion, available from now until December 13. Choose from more than a dozen à la carte items, ranging from drunken hairy crab to braised crab roe served with tofu. For those who want to spoil themselves silly, executive chef Miki Imagawa has two deluxe 10-course menus ($1,500 or $1,800 per person) featuring the finest crustacean dishes as well as other Yu Lei signatures. 5/F, Harbourfront Landmark, 11 Wan Hoi St, Hung Hom, 3746 2788.
